Raise the Woof Comedy Event a Big Success!
At Paws Animal Rescue, our volunteers and board members are constantly looking for new fundraising ideas. On Saturday, October 7th, we had the privilege of bringing a wonderful event to our community for the first time: Raise the Woof.
Raise the Woof is a comedy tour that works with local animal rescue groups to spread awareness and raise money for their cause. Three of their comedians traveled to Pierre to entertain us – and with great success!
TIME TO LAUGH
Local radio host DT Meyer of Todays KCCR was our EmCee for the night, introducing the schedule of events. This included the dessert dash, comedy acts, silent auction and raffle drawing.
Raise the Woof comedian and host Dan Juola kicked off the comedy act, followed by Ron Lamprecht. Ron’s irreverent observances of his own self and audience members resulted in one person literally sprayed their drink across the table with laughter!
Left: Ron Lamprecht, Right: Lamont Ferguson
Ron Lamprecht
Our headliner was Lamont Ferguson, who has opened for many well-known comedians including George Carlin, Bill Cosby, Steve Harvey, Larry Miller and Garry Shandling. Lamont managed to fill the room with laughter with an intelligent, original and insightful act.
DESSERT DASH
14 delicious desserts were donated by Paws supporters for the Dessert Dash, including a beautiful cake by Jen Uecker of Sugar Momma’s Custom Cakery. Jen is on the Board of Directors of Paws and also had the immense task of organizing the event from start to finish.

Foster Homes Needed
Do you have the space, time and desire to become a foster parent to a homeless dog or cat? If so, we need you! As a foster parent, you take special needs dogs or cats into your home and care for them until they are adopted or able to return to the shelter.
Why/When Are Foster Homes Needed?
Here are some of the situations that may prompt this need:
- We get a litter of kittens or puppies. They may been orphaned and require bottle-feeding, or we may need a safe, comfortable spot to keep both mother and babies.
- A cat or dog has special needs. For example:
- A dog suffers from anxiety and isn’t used to other dogs. Being at the shelter may cause additional stress, which in turn could cause other problems.
- A cat is undergoing medical treatment or requires special care that cannot be provided at the shelter.
- The shelter is full. This is a rare occurrence, but could happen if we get a lot of animals at the pound during a particular period.
Why Should I Foster?
There are many reasons why you should consider fostering a homeless animal. Here are just a few:
- You’re saving an animal’s life. If not claimed by owners or a local animal rescue organization, homeless animals face euthanasia after 3-5 days at the pound.
- You help to get the animal ready for adoption. By providing the love, affection and perhaps training they need, they have more chance of being chosen by potential adopters and flourishing in their new home.
- You may not have the time to volunteer or the money to donate to your local shelter. Fostering an animal means you get to help in a different way.
- You get all the advantages of owning a pet without having the financial or long-term responsibility. We provide all food, supplies and vet care needed for that specific dog or cat.
- Fostering an animal is a very rewarding experience. Saying goodbye once they find their forever home can be tough, but don’t be put off by this. You have shown a homeless animal the love and affection they may never have received before. Vice versa, interacting with animals has proven mental health benefits.
- Your own pet has the chance to learn social skills from being around your foster animal.
- You get to see if you are ready for another pet. Perhaps you are unsure if you have the time, space and energy for another animal. You can find this out without making a long-term commitment.
- You get to discover more about the animal’s personality, which can then be shared with the shelter and potential adopters. Knowing more about them means you are better able to find them the right home.
If you would like to become a foster home for our homeless cats and/or dogs, please email us at [email protected]. You can download a foster application form from our Forms page.

Appeal for Help
As many of you will know, we regularly contact Hughes County pound to check for dogs and cats found at large, surrendered, or recovered by law enforcement. At the end of the pound’s 5-day hold, these animals are either claimed by their owners, taken in by animal shelters, or euthanized. Last week we took in two dogs suffering from untreated medical conditions. We couldn’t stand by and let these dogs be put to sleep when we believe they could both recover and flourish in a new home.
Jupiter is an 8-year-old female white German Shepherd. Pluto is a 9-month-old male black lab mix. Both dogs have severe mange and skin infections. Their lymph nodes are very swollen and their systems are fighting off infection, which means we have to be careful with the treatment they are given and avoid vaccinations at this point. Despite their conditions, they are both incredibly loving, well mannered and house trained.
We are appealing for your help to cover the cost of their ongoing medical treatment. Their are several ways to donate, as shown on our Donations page. Alternatively, donations can be given directly to All Creatures Animal Hospital, where Jupiter and Pluto are receiving treatment.
Thank you for your continued support of Paws Animal Rescue and our wonderful dogs and cats.

Paws Wins Prize in 2016 Shelter Challenge
GreaterGood.org is an independent 501(c)(3) charitable organization that has given over $100 million in cash and product grants to charity partners and programs worldwide that work toward their mission. Earlier this year, we were notified by the charity that we had won State Second prize of the 2016 Rescue Box Shelter Challenge through our affiliation with PetFinder and votes from the public. Recently, we received our prize of 15 rescue boxes containing treats, toys and grooming tools for cats and dogs!
Thank you to GreaterGood.org for helping animal rescue organizations around the world. We would like to thank all the people that voted for Paws Animal Rescue and continue to support us every step of the way. This was an unexpected surprise and our cats and dogs very much appreciate it.

Lister Donation Goal Exceeded!
You may remember reading about Lister in A Call for Help a month ago. We shared details of his surgery to repair a fractured tibia and appealed for donations to cover costs. We are thrilled to announce that the community stepped up and donated a total of $2230 to cover the cost of Lister’s surgery and aftercare. We can’t thank you enough for your help in restoring this adorable little boy back to health. Lister is doing very well and is scheduled for x-rays this week to see when his external fixator will be removed. He will then be going into foster care with Joanne, who will ensure his leg is allowed to heal correctly without too much activity.

2016 – A Year in Review
OPERATING COSTS
Did you know it costs $108,000 annually ($9,000 monthly) to keep the doors of Paws Animal Rescue open? This number includes only the basics, such as: cat/dog food, liter, initial vet exam, vaccinations, spay or neuter, treatment/surgery for various injuries, treatment/medication for various diseases and/or necessary dental surgery/cleaning, plus heating/cooling, phone, taxes and insurance, and miscellaneous expenses.
CAREGIVERS
The shelter does employ two part-time care givers during the week, plus has the additional expense of paying weekend morning help of three inmates from the Women’s Prison, including transportation of the inmates by River Cities Transit. Volunteers fill 20 shifts per week in the dog kennel area, while other volunteers fill 15 shifts in the feline area. This cost does not include necessary building repairs, renovations or capital assets. These funds are generated solely by donations and a few grants.
SPAY/NEUTER CERTIFICATES
We do offer a reduced cost spay/neuter program to residents of Pierre/Ft. Pierre and Hughes/Stanley Counties. These certificates allow residents to spay/neuter their animals for half the normal cost, with the shelter paying the remainder of the cost.
FUNDRAISERS
We are constantly on the move and hustling. The shelter conducts several events a year to help raise operating funds. Examples of 2016 fundraising efforts include but are not limited to:

Thank you to the current Board of Directors, Employees, Volunteers, Donators, the Community, and the Public for continuing to make Paws Animal Rescue bigger and better each year! None of this could be achieved without each and every one of you. We are so fortunate and blessed to live in such a caring and compassionate community. Fortunate too that there is a deep understanding of and commitment to the work of ending the plight of homeless cats and dogs by giving them a safe/secure place to stay, medical treatment, vaccinations, spaying/ neutering, and placing them in a loving forever home. The Paw – Winter 2016
Rumor/Reaper’s Story
Some of you may remember reading about Rumor’s rescue back in Summer 2016. To our delight, he was adopted last month and renamed Reaper. We figured it was time to share his story again with plenty of updates.
One day in Summer 2016, a rescue group outside of Pierre contacted us with a special case: a dog injured by a porcupine. They couldn’t afford to pay for the medical treatment Reaper desperately needed, so they needed our help. Volunteers quickly went to collect him in order to take him to the vet.
First Impressions
The first time we saw Reaper, it was quite a shock. Quills had penetrated deep into his muzzle, neck and chest and his skin looked angry and sore. Due to fear and pain, he had to be sedated in order to be moved from the vehicle to the surgical room at the Animal Clinic. During his examination, the doctor determined that the quills had been present for up to two weeks! They had also penetrated his left eyeball and his sight was at risk. On top of all that, he had double ear infections, punctured ear drums, and was riddled with ticks. The doctor quickly got to work pulling out the quills, while our volunteers removed the ticks. Altogether, the process took three hours. Reaper was given oral antibiotics along with eye and ear drops. His medical bills were substantially higher than other dogs at the shelter, so we appealed for donations to help. The next step was to determine his aftercare.
Aftercare
Reaper was placed in foster care with Paws veteran Betty Truax. Betty has fostered numerous animals and nursed many back to health. Upon initial arrival, Reaper slept for most of three days, waking only for food and water. On the fourth day, he woke to explore his new surroundings and relieve himself. Betty, of course, gave him lots of hugs and affection. He needed it after all he had been through! Luckily, his eyesight made a full recovery. After allowing him to heal and put on weight, it was time to plan his future.
Finding a Furever Home
Initially, our plan was for Reaper to join the other dogs at the shelter following his recovery. Due to his breed, many volunteers expressed fear and apprehension about taking care of him alone. We decided to leave him in foster care for the time being. He was taken to the shelter during open hours in the hope of finding his furever home. Despite being well-behaved, crate-trained, house-trained and loving, the stigma attached to pit bulls meant that he didn’t initially gain a lot of interest. He was up for adoption for five months until he finally met a wonderful lady, Stephanie Heyd, who showed him love instead of fear. Introductions to Stephanie’s husband, their one-year-old pit bull and feisty seven-year-old Yorkie/Maltese went extremely well. Reference checks were also great. It was clear to us that we’d found Reaper’s furever home!
New Life
Reaper has settled into his new home like it was truly meant to be. Have you ever heard of a 72-pound lap dog? Reaper loves to snuggle up on Stephanie’s lap! She is more than happy to accommodate him. At night, he and his brother, Mr Mayhem (one year old pitbull), choose their spot on the couch or loveseat. They even have their own furniture.
Stephanie reports than Reaper is incredibly laid back – nothing seems to bother him. His Yorkie/Maltese brother, Jax, is quite a handful and runs the household. Reaper has no problem with his feisty behavior and chooses to ignore it. The same goes for Mr Mayhem – he is young, full of energy and wants to play all the time. Before Reaper was in his furever home, he would never play with other dogs or toys. Mr Mayhem taught him to do both. Reaper will oblige him for a while and once he’s had enough, he will just walk away without becoming frustrated. Talk about easy going!
Reaper cuddling with Mr Mayhem
Mayhem with Jemma – Reaper with Stephanie
Reaper is a gentleman with Stephanie’s five granddaughters. Three-year-old Jemma likes to play vet with him. As he lays on the floor, she will place a cover over him and check his ears! They’ve had three other rescue pit bulls before who all got along well with the children. Reaper and Mr Mayhem are taken for walks outside of town and let off the leash. Rumor will stay by his mom’s side. She states, “I feel like we won the lottery with Reaper. He is the sweetest, most gentle dog.”
As volunteers and animal lovers, happy stories like this make our lives complete and our hard work worthwhile. Please consider adding the adoption of shelter animals, fostering, making a donation, or volunteering to your list of New Year’s resolutions!
A Call for Help
At Paws, our shelter dogs and cats typically come from the local Pierre/Fort Pierre area. On occasion, we get a call for help from outside the local area. On Thursday December 29th, we received such a call from a fellow dog rescuer.
Three dogs needed our help and had nowhere to go. The oldest of the three dogs was of unknown breed, around 9 months old and had been abandoned by his owners on one of the coldest nights of the year. The other two were black labrador puppies, one male and one female, around 6 months old. The male puppy had been hit by a car and had an injured leg. While lying by the cold, icy roadside, his sister laid next to him and cried, alerting a local resident to the situation.
Diagnosis
After driving out of town to pick up the dogs, volunteers headed straight to All Creatures Animal Hospital in Pierre. Staff stayed open long past closing time to help. After some much-needed pain medication, X-Rays were taken. It was discovered that the poor pup, now named Lister, had a fractured tibia. Dr Trexler-Myren stabilized the leg with a splint and determined that surgery would provide the best outcome in the long term. Lister was then left to get some much-needed rest. The oldest dog, now named Kryten, was taken the shelter. The female puppy, now named Kristine, was taken home by a volunteer for some comfort and cuddles.

Surgery and Outcome
Lister’s surgery began just after 10am on Saturday (New Year’s Eve!). Lacey Boxley of Hopeless to Homes Animal Rescue stepped in to assist. She worked alongside Dr Trexler-Myren for 7 years and assisted on many orthopedic surgeries. The two bone fragments were straightened and held together with a pin. Cerclage wires were wrapped around the fracture to provide further support. An external skeletal fixator was put in place to stabilize the leg. The surgery lasted a few hours and everything went according to plan. Dr Trexler-Myren did a wonderful job!
Preparing for surgery
Fractured tibia required surgery
After Surgery
Lister will rest and recover for the next 5 weeks. After that time, the external fixator will be removed and his movement will need to be restricted to allow the bone to heal properly. In order to receive the best care, Lister will need to remain at the hospital for the next 6-8 weeks.

As many of you know, surgical procedures and care of this kind come at a substantial expense. The final bill for Lister’s treatment and recovery will be around $2000. This is where we need your help. Paws is funded by donations from the local community, and this is one of the occasions we need them the most. Please consider donating as little or as much as you can – every little bit helps. You can donate online, in person during open hours, or by mail. Check out our donations page for more details.
We are incredibly grateful to Dr Trexler-Myren, Lacey Boxley, our volunteers, and the unsung dog and cat rescuers out there who sacrifice their time and money to help animals.
Lister will be available following his recovery. Kristine is available for adoption now, along with Kryten. Look out for details and images on our Available Pets page soon!
Updates
January 4th from the vet:
Lister is doing well. Putting more weight on healing leg. Went outside for bried walk this morning. Seems increasingly happy and social.
We have raised $700 of the $2000 estimated cost of his surgery and care. Thank you so much for those who have donated so far! We still need help to raise the rest – please consider a donation of any size.
January 3rd:
Kristine is in foster care and has an adoption pending!
We have received $600 in donations so far. Please help us to raise the estimated $2000!
January 1st from the vet:
Baby Lister still doing nicely. Alert and eating this morning, toe touching on leg, flexing and extending well, minimal swelling or discharge. Seems comfortable. Tail wagging works well!

Paws Update 11-28
Greetings, animal lovers! We’ve been so busy over the past couple of weeks that we could no longer call this the “Weekly Update!” Below is a summary of each of the latest adoptions, events and happenings at Paws to get you up to speed.
Upcoming Events
- Saturday, December 3rd from 9 am to Noon – Christmas Bake Sale at Runnings
Recent Adoptions
We’ve been lucky enough to find some wonderful homes for dogs over the past two weeks! We were able to snap some pictures to show you below. As always, our only hope is to match this success with cat adoptions. Come and visit during our open hours to fall in love with one of our feline residents. Imagine a warm, purring, fuzzy creature nestling on your lap during the winter!
Jack with new owner Pat and his niece
Beautiful Rio went to live with a family that adopted a dog from Paws a few years ago. Rio will be adored by a little 5 year old girl who couldn’t wait to get him home.
Rizado/Rosie Visit
Rosie (formerly known as Rizado) stopped by for a visit with her mom, Lynette Frederickson. Our dog whisperer Steve was very happy to see her, and vice versa! Rosie was adopted from Paws earlier this month when Lynette came by to see if we had any small dogs. She had to put her beloved 14 year old rat terrier to sleep the month prior, so was looking for a new companion. She wasn’t sure if she was ready for one immediately, but after meeting Rosie, she (and we) knew it was meant to be.
Lynette reports that Rosie is already the boss at her new home, waking her mom up at 7:30am each morning by licking her eyes, nose and ears! She likes to climb up and perch as high as possible and her favorite spot is on top of the couch cushions. At feeding time, she takes one piece of food at a time into the next room to eat. Lynette also has to use the child locks in her car because Rosie has figured out how to roll the windows down!

A Happy Ending for Ella
Ella’s Arrival
Ella arrived at the shelter at the end of August 2016. As usual, we knew very little about her other than what we could glean from first impressions. She loved water! As soon as we’d fill up her shiny bucket, she’d stick her head inside and start splashing around. We learned to only fill it up half way to make sure her kennel wasn’t constantly wet. Outside, the sun was still hot and bright in the sky, which meant we could regularly fill up one of our kiddy pools for her to play in to her heart’s content.

Ella would bark a lot. At first, we saw this as a nuisance and tried to figure out why. It didn’t take long to discover that she just wanted to be let out of her kennel to be by your side, happily (and quietly) following you as you went about your business. We regularly test out new dogs to see who can be play pals, meaning we can let more than one outside in each yard at a time to maximize their play time. Ella was the one who could play with everyone. She saw a lot of play partners come and go in her time at the shelter, patiently waiting for her time to come.
Two Months at the Shelter
After two months and very few inquiries about Ella, Burgundy and Andy Pitsor traveled from Rapid City to meet her. They’d seen pictures of her on our website and from her description, thought she might be a good fit for their lifestyle. They brought along their black lab, Bella, who just happened to be Ella’s twin! They got along very well and were instant play pals. It quickly became obvious that we’d found the perfect home for Ella.
New Beginnings
Ella is now called Ellie and is learning her new name well! True to our first impressions of her, Burgundy and Andy report that she loves baths! Burgundy uses a special shampoo and Ellie’s fur is now beautifully shiny like Bella’s. She also loves to play with her sister in their giant fenced-in yard. Now that the snow has started to fall, it has made finding their ball a fun task. Ellie likes to follow her new mom around the house and sleep on her feet. She really hit the jackpot with her furever home!

Thank you to Burgundy and Andy Pitsor for being wonderful, loving parents to Ellie and Bella. Happy endings like this make our lives worthwhile.
Paws Bake Sales at Runnings
Fun at the Catio Grand Opening
Despite the cold weather, our catio grand opening on Saturday saw a steady stream of visitors. Our board members had given the shelter a bit of a makeover in preparation and president Brenda Manning very generously bought the supplies along with some beautiful artwork. Thank you, Brenda!! We don’t know what we’d do without you. Our wonderful volunteers worked hard to make the shelter look clean and tidy. Super Sally and Melita also baked delicious brownies and chocolate chip cookies for the occasion.
Thank you to all those who attended and to all the people who donated to make this entire project possible. Several of our kitty residents have not been outside for up to seven years, so this goes towards making their lives happier and healthier.
As of this date, we have made $6000 towards construction costs! We still need your help to reach the total amount of $10,000. Please consider donating today. Every little helps.

Costello’s Story
By Costello, Derek and Kelsey
Hello my name is Costello. Mom and Dad call me Stello for short. Some of you may remember me from the shelter. I was the dog sitting in the corner that would not make eye contact with you, had no confidence, and did not even think that anyone would love me. Then one day this couple comes in to look at me. They took me up to this room and sat and tried to play with me. I was not so sure about that. Instead I sat on the couch and eventually laid down.
The next day they took me to the park. There were so many smells! I then had to go back to the shelter. Mom and Dad went home and decided to adopt me. They tell me that they really wanted to rescue a dog. I had been in the shelter for over a year! They decided they wanted me. They really wanted me! I had never felt like this before.
They picked me up and took me home. They look back at the first family picture and are shocked. They were nervous about the ride to Rapid. But I laid there and was the best boy ever. I got to my new home. Mom and Dad were carrying things up the stairs and I was terrified. The air conditioner would come on and I had no idea what it was. That clicking drove me nuts!! I also struggled to eat. Mom and Dad had to pretend like they did not see me. The first night there I snuggled right in between Mom and Dad. Their hearts instantly melted.
It took about two weeks and then I was ready to start playing and exploring. I could not get enough of that ball! The Frisbee was something so weird. Now I like to try and catch it in my mouth. Right away in the morning usually around 5:30 I start to bring all of my toys into bed. Then if Mom and Dad move I lick their faces like crazy. Now I am not talking about just a few licks, it is a full bath. Then I usually put my nose under dad’s head and nudge him out of bed. I am not sure why they tell me to stop. I’m just trying to help.
My days are usually spent waiting for Mom and Dad to get home. Then when they are home they play with me and love me. I love to bring my orange ball to bed. But since I am missing a tooth it is hard to keep it in my mouth. I am such a different dog now. I love to run, play, and explore. That ball and frisbee are so fun to play with. Dad throws it so far and I have to run and go get it. Mom is not as good at throwing far. She can throw but just not far.
I still eat fast but Mom and Dad can be there now. I still get scared of boxes, the outside world, new people, or loud noises. I am learning that they love me more than anything else. Sometimes Mom and Dad will take me to the movies! How many dogs say they get to go to the movies with their Mom and Dad?! On the weekends we go to the parks and play. I still have my safe spots. My safe spots are the corner of the couch, bed, or the back of Mom or Dad’s car.
I just wanted to let everyone know how I am doing. Which I would say I am doing awesome! I get unconditional love from them. Sometimes I get in trouble because I am being naughty but I know that they still love me. And I love them right back! I also wanted to let all of the “unadoptable dogs and cats” out there know that you will be adopted. I have finally found my furever home and you will too!
Love,
Costello, Derek, and Kelsey

RECENT ADOPTIONS
We’ve had a busy month with dogs intakes and adoptions. Ideally, we’d like to match or exceed this success with cat adoptions this month, since we’re currently home to over 40 feline friends. We give as much love and attention to our shelter animals as possible, but it can’t match the love they’d receive in their own forever home.
We managed to snap a couple of images of our adoptions this week to share with you. As volunteers, we can’t begin to express the joy we feel when we find the right homes for our shelter pets.
Paws at Northridge Plaza
Bruce Kessler from Gator’s Pizza, Pasta and Subs supported Paws Animal Rescue by allowing us to bus tables from 11 am – 3 pm today. We will receive a portion of the proceeds. Melita Hauge and her sister served pie with a friendly smile.
Just outside Gator’s, Super Sally and her husband, Dan, sold Paws T-Shirts, Aprons, Desk Calendars and Note Cards to raise funds for the shelter. Last but not least, Lori Grode and other volunteers offered face painting for a donation of a $1. Thank you to Bruce Kessler and to all the volunteers who helped!
CATIO UPDATE
The catio is close to completion and our shelter cats are eager to get out into the fresh air. A special thanks to our hard-working contractor, Jim. He goes out of his way to make sure every project is perfect.
We have raised $4,642.94 towards construction costs so far. This is wonderful and thank you to everyone who has donated. Please donate today to help.

Paws Fun at the Fall Festival
What a great event the Fall Festival at East Pierre Garden Center, Pierre, SD was last Saturday. Paws Animal Rescue took over a corner in the back of one of the greenhouses. Our spread was enough to command attention but I really think it was the dogs that did that for us!
We want to thank everyone who stopped by to visit, gave a little love to one of our special dogs, purchased a Paws T-Shirt, Paws Desk Calendar, Paws Note Cards, Paws Cupcake, donated to the catio fund, or donated toward our general funds – THANK YOU!!!
Now to say thank you to some of our great volunteers: Melita Hauge, Sally Boyd, and Mary Creager who made dog biscuits. President Brenda Manning can attest that they were “Weimaraner Approved”. The Great Dane and German Shorthair Pointer also thought they were wonderful!
Melita, Sally and Lauren Bland also worked the booth all afternoon. Lauren is new to Paws and is one of our Greeters. She was vital in handling dogs and helping set up and tear down. We want to thank Ava Westover, a brand new Greeter who stayed behind at Paws to welcome the public and direct them.
Thank you to Sam, Steve and Jenna. Sam Wempe for working and transporting dogs. Steve Coss also worked, transported dogs and harassed whomever he could! Jenna Schiefelbein coordinated our event and also transported dogs.
Thank you to our creative crew – Kaitlin Kwasniewski made ADORABLE cat and dog note cards. Web master Joanne Pullman made AMAZING 2017 dog and cat desk calendars and designed Paws t-shirts. Heath Kastein vectorized the silhouette and sun for the t-shirt design which basically makes it print ready. The note cards and desk calendars all feature cats/dogs that were or still are with Paws Animal Rescue. All our items will be showcased on the website soon and available for purchase to raise funds for the shelter.
We are saving the sweetest for last: Thank You Jen Uecker with Sugar Mamas! She came up big for us again with her delicious cupcakes which sold out and brought a ton of traffic to our area! They taste as good as they look! Jen also featured her cupcakes at our Turkey Dinner.

Catio Update
Every time we stop at the shelter, there has been a lot of progress on the catio. The cats keep sitting at the windows wondering when they can go outside! They are as anxious as we are.
While the construction is ongoing, we continue to ask for donations for the catio. This is an expensive project, but one we would not walk away from. The cats deserve to be able to go outside. Please donate today to help.

Thank you, Ryder Dobberpuhl!
At just 8 years of age, this is the fourth time Ryder Dobberpuhl has chosen to forgo birthday presents such as toys and games. Instead, he asks family and friends for pet food and treats. He then travels all the way to Pierre from Sioux Falls with his family to donate them, in person, to Paws Animal Rescue.
Ryder initially took his donations to Sioux Falls Humane Society but was met with a lack of enthusiasm. Workers barely acknowledged his presence and asked him to place the pet food in a corner. Ryder’s grandmother happened to be friends with Pierre resident and Paws volunteer Julia Jones, and hit upon the idea of donating to our shelter. We’re so glad that they did!
At Paws, we are so appreciative of donations of any size. Without the generosity of the local (and not so local, in this case) community, we wouldn’t be able to continue our vital work.
Again, thank you Ryder!!

- Spread the word – tell family and friends, share our Facebook posts.
- Become a Member – more members means more advocates for our animals! See below for the membership drive prize details.

Catio Update
As you can see by the picture Jenna took yesterday, the Catio is coming along nicely. Jim must live out there as he is always working on it when we go out to the shelter. The cats seem to enjoy supervising him through the windows. They are also eagerly awaiting the chance to use it! Remember, some of our cats have not been outside for seven years.
THANK YOU to our generous donors. We have raised $2,347 of the $10,000 we need. We have a ways to go but the amount has doubled from what we reported ($1,112) on October 11, 2016. This is so exciting! Donate today to help.

PAWS Catio Featured in Capital Journal
The Capital Journal recently stopped by the PAWS shelter to check out the site of the future catio and find out more information. Below is an excerpt of the resulting article in today’s paper.
The three cat rooms at Paws animal shelter have just about everything a cat could want: cat toys, cat trees, cat beds and a winding walkway above people’s heads where the cats can walk and look down on the humans who come to visit.
Well, they’ve got everything except access to the outside.
That will soon change. The animal shelter is building a patio especially for cats. They’re calling it the “catio.”
Brenda Manning of Pierre, president of Paws, described the catio as a totally enclosed outdoor area the 35 cats at the shelter can use and be able to experience the outdoors. Just outside the cation will be an area planted with bushes and shade trees, which they hope will attract birds and other wildlife that the cats can look at, providing added entertainment for the cats.
The facility will be surrounded on all sides by a mesh fence. A roof will keep the cats inside and provide some shelter from the elements making it a “three-season” facility, said contractor Jim McClelland.
The project has been a long time coming, Manning said.
“We’ve dreamed about it for years, absolutely years. Because we’ve got cats that have been here for seven years, and they never get outside, which we just can’t even imagine, not being able to do that,” she said.
You can read the full story at the Capital Journal website.

“BIG BUCKS” AND PALS SECURE CITY OF PIERRE FUNDING
The City of Pierre agreed to add PAWS to the list of recipients for 2017 funding, with a $3000 donation. President Manning visited the budget meeting, bringing out the bling with her “Big Bucks Necklace”. She was accompanied by other board members and two special guests: former shelter stars Avery Truax (Aussie) and Sam Manning (German Short-Hair Pointer).
Thank you to the City of Pierre. We are always in need of donations to continue to house and care for homeless animals. Please donate today to make a difference. Every little helps.

PAWS Secures City of Pierre Funding
Avery Truax (Aussie) and Sam Manning (German Short-Hair Pointer) recently appeared in front of the Pierre City Commission to appeal for funding as part of the 2017 Pierre City budget. President Manning did a presentation with the support of Vice President Melita Hauge, Treasurer Betty Truax, Board Member David Voeltz, and Kyle Manning.
We are happy to announce that PAWS Animal Rescue has been awarded $3,000, which will be available after the first of the year. We plan to purchase sound absorption panels for the dog area.
Both Avery and Sam came through the Pierre pound and adopted their respective owners (Betty Truax and Brenda & Kyle Manning). They were a hit at the meeting and drew a lot of attention. President Manning brought out the bling with her “Big Bucks Necklace”, which set the tone for an informative but fun presentation.
THANK YOU to all of our Board Members, Volunteers, Members, Donators, Avery, and Sam. Together we make a winning team for the animals.
