Lost Pets
WHAT IF YOUR PET BECOMES LOST
- Keep your pet’s identification tags up to date and make sure they are wearing them at all times.
- Have a recent picture of your pet in case your pet becomes missing.
- If you you pet is lost, contact Animal Control (police dept.) – (605) 773-7410
The animals that are picked up by Law Enforcement are brought to the pound. Animals picked up in Pierre and Hughes County are held for 5 days while Ft. Pierre pets are held only 3 days to give the owners a chance to claim their lost pet.
If the owner has not claimed the animal during this time, then Paws Animal Rescue has the option to save the animal. Paws Animal Rescue takes the animal depending on available space, demeanor, age, and health of animal.
If we don’t have space at the shelter or in a foster home, the animal is euthanized by the appropriate city or county entity. This is why it is so important to remember to check with the police department (605-773-7410) if you have lost your beloved pet!
